Hi-Def Picture Resolution
Describes the number of lines in the vertical display resolution and whether progressive scan frames (p) or interlaced fi elds (i) are used. The format 720p is 1280 × 720 pixels, progressive encoding. The format 1080i is 1920 × 1080 pixels, interlaced encoding. The format 1080p is 1920 × 1080 pixels, progressive encoding.

Plasma TV
A plasma TV is a type of fl at-panel display used for large TV displays (typically above 42”). Tiny cells located between two panels of glass hold an inert mixture of gases. The gas in the cells is electrically turned into a plasma which then excites phosphors to emit light.

LCD TV
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology utilizes two thin, polarized panels that sandwich a thin liquid-crystal gel divided into individual pixels. A grid of wires allows each pixel to be activated individually. When an LCD pixel darkens, it polarizes at 90° to the polarizing screens. This blocks light from passing through the LCD screen where that pixel has darkened.

DLP® TV
In DLP® projectors, the image is created by microscopically small mirrors laid out in a matrix on a semiconductor chip. Each mirror represents one pixel in the projected image. The number of mirrors corresponds to the resolution of the projected image.

LCoS TV
Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) is a refl ective technology similar to DLP®; however, it uses liquid crystals instead of individual mirrors. Liquid crystals are applied directly to the surface of a silicon chip coated with some type of highly refl ective layer.

LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits narrowspectrum light. LEDs produce more light per Watt than incandescent bulbs, and can emit light of an intended color without the use of color fi lters that traditional lighting methods require.

HDMI
High-Defi nition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a single-wire, all-digital audio/video interface between any compatible digital audio/video source, such as a set-top box, a DVD player and a compatible digital audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV).

February 17th, 2009
Congress has mandated this date as the end to all analog TV broadcasting. After that, all broadcasts will be in Digital TV. Find out more...

CCFL Wide Color Gamut backlight
All LCD TVs use a light source behind the screen. CCFL Wide Color Gamut is the light source that provides the most accurate color rendition.
